The United Kingdom is a founding member of EMBL, and has hosted EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute since 1994. We recognise that the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will have a profound impact on the country, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the Royal Family at this difficult time.

“In common with most of our British staff, I have only known one monarch – Queen Elizabeth II,” said Ewan Birney, Deputy Director General of EMBL and Director of EMBL-EBI. “From my childhood to now she represented not just the United Kingdom but also a life of service to her country. She never flinched from this duty and coupled it with warmth and kindness that I could appreciate even from my distant perspective. I know many people at EMBL, British or not, will reflect on her remarkable life and draw inspiration from it.”

To honour Queen Elizabeth’s memory, the EMBL-EBI flag will be at half mast.
