Changes to EMBL-EBI’s Senior Management Team

EMBL-EBI has announced changes to its Senior Management Team, designed to strengthen the institute’s research and service delivery. 

• Julio Saez-Rodriguez has been appointed as EMBL-EBI’s new Head of Research, responsible for setting the vision, strategy and scientific direction of the research taking place at the institute. 
• Associate Director for EMBL-EBI Services, Jo McEntyre, has been promoted to Deputy Director of EMBL-EBI. Alongside her existing responsibilities in leading the services, training and IT areas of the institute, she will also deputise for Director Ewan Birney. 
• Joint Director Rolf Apweiler is stepping back to a new role of Associate Director, as he looks towards retirement. 

“These changes are designed to strengthen the leadership team at EMBL-EBI, and demonstrate our commitment to sustained growth and innovation,” said Ewan Birney, EMBL-EBI Director and EMBL Deputy Director General. 

Saez-Rodriguez was a Research Group Leader at EMBL-EBI between 2010 and 2015. His next role was Professor of Computational Biomedicine at RWTH-Aachen University, after which he was a Professor at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University in Germany. The Saez-Rodriguez research group focuses on understanding disease mechanisms using multiomics data, including single-cell and spatial data. They do this by combining machine learning, mathematical models and existing scientific knowledge. 

“We’re pleased to welcome Julio back and we look forward to supporting him in  reinvigorating the research community at EMBL-EBI,” said Birney. 

“Rolf has been at EMBL-EBI since its inception 30 years ago, and we have been Joint Directors for almost a decade. As we start planning for his retirement, I would like to thank him for his leadership and support over the years. 

“I would also like to congratulate Jo on her new appointment, and am looking forward to working together to shape the strategy and future direction of EMBL-EBI. I am delighted to continue to have the input of Rolf and of Rachel Curran on the Senior Management Team”

Following these changes, EMBL-EBI’s Senior Management Team consists of:

• Ewan Birney – Director of EMBL-EBI and Deputy Director General of EMBL
• Jo McEntyre – Deputy Director of EMBL-EBI and Director of EMBL’s Office for Scientific Information Mangement 
• Rolf Apweiler – Associate Director of EMBL-EBI
• Rachel Curran – Head of EMBL-EBI Administration & Operations and Deputy Chief Operating Officer of EMBL
• Julio Saez-Rodriguez – Head of Research at EMBL-EBI
