EMBL-EBI’s Director Emeritus named Vice President of European Research Council’s governing body
Janet Thornton will take up the role of joint Vice President of the Scientific Council in the new year

19 December, Cambridge – Janet Thornton, Director Emeritus and Senior Scientist at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), has been named joint Vice President of the European Research Council’s (ERC) governing body, the Scientific Council.
Assuming the role in January 2019, Janet will focus on ERC activities in the life sciences. Fellow Vice President, Fabio Zwirner, Professor of Theoretical Physics at University of Padua, will concentrate on the area of physical sciences and engineering.
In addition to the new position, Janet’s mandate as a Scientific Council member has been renewed for two years.

Formed by the European Union in 2007, the ERC is the leading organisation providing funding to frontier research in Europe. Every year it selects and funds ambitious and creative researchers, of any age and nationality, to run Europe-based projects. To date, the ERC has funded some 9,000 top researchers at various stages in their careers.
